Saint Edward's Pirates: 2017 District 23 Champions
In what can only be described as a "Tale of Two Halves", Saint Edward's School pulls off an incredible comeback victory after being down 9-3 at halftime. In the first half, Martin County pounced on every opportunity we gave them, and literally we turned the ball over and over, and over again during less than stellar play in the first half. Thank goodness Pirate senior attackman KC Barry played lights out in the first half, adding two goals to our count along with Wils Tucker first goal of the game.
There was good news from a defensive perspective during the first half. Only one of Martin County's goals came on a settled offensive burst, meaning, if we could settle down (not turn the ball over in such bad spots) and just be patient our defense was capable of handling the Tigers settled offense.
The second half can only be described as momentous. After a Spring lacrosse season filled with adversity and in some cases heartbreak, the Pirates summoned the "Heart of Champions" and rose above the fray. Slowly but surely whittling away at a six goal disadvantage, the momentum began to change with each glimmer of hope as our Pirates began to make plays.
The playmaking started to snowball through the 3rd quarter and soon it was 'game on"! And once it was a game again, the Pirates were in full out battle mode with some gutsy effort from everyone. What started out as a comeback became an onslaught.
An injured Chase Stokes gutted out an injury that kept him out of first half play, and all of a sudden we had another scoring threat on the field, that helped clear the path for our offense. Gage Bartosch found the back of the net for four goals in the second half of play, KC Barry added his third goal of the game, while Josh Pusser added a tally, and Chase Stokes got three of his own during one of the most memorable comebacks I have been associated with as a coach.
Relentless is really the only word for the work that our Pirates put forth in the second half! The score ended 12-11, in an amazing night for the 2017 Pirates.
